On a wet and windy Saturday morning eighteen stalwart Bingley Harriers tackled the traditional Christmas Handicap from Dowley Locks over Hope Hill, through Hawksworth Spring Wood and back over Hope Hill to Dowley Locks, a distance of about seven and a half miles.
Conditions underfoot were heavy but everyone seemed to have a good run and the handicapping worked really well.
As is the tradition, the course is not marked and I only had a few marshals at the main road crossings….competitors can choose their own route as long as the summit of Hope Hill is visited on the way out and back and the route through Hawksworth Spring Wood is followed.
With a couple of Internationals running, a member of the armed forces and an age range from mid-twenties to well over seventy including old and new members it was a mixed field but all seemed to enjoy the satisfaction of completing the course….in poor conditions.
Committee member Caren Crabtree was first home followed closely by the handicapper, Stephen Fry and Adrian Netherwood’s son, Dan, in third. Internationals Colin Walker and Emma Moran were fastest male and female.
Thanks to Barbara for Registration. Also, to John Capenerhurst for timekeeping and Jude Wilson recording. Thanks to the hardy marshals on the course; Robert Adamson, Becky and Alan Weight and Bob Dover, it is reassuring to have marshals at the main road crossings. Stephen did a great job with the handicaps, thanks Stephen.
Thank you to those who donated prizes which meant all those attending the presentation went away with a prize! The Sports Club was open for coffee and drinks after the race.
The event did make a reasonable surplus.
Finally thank you to the competitors who turned out to make the day very worthwhile and enjoyable.
