Bingley Harriers on the Winter fells and the Club Fell Championship kicks off at Windy Hill .

Hebden 15 & 22 – Sat 27th Jan
The Hebden is a popular early long event for Bingley fell runners spending the winter preparing for the likes of the Three Peaks in April. It is a 15 or 22 mile run or walk taking in the tops (and bottoms!) around Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd and Cragg Vale, organised by the Scouts as a fund raiser. Jo, recovering from a calf strain, and Chloe did the walk option. Results and a few photos below. The results don’t include club; if I missed you, let me know and I can add you in.

Rombald’s Stride 23miles – Sat 3 Feb
Another Scout organised Long Distance Walk (or run) Association (LDWA) challenge – 23 miles up over Rombalds, Ilkley and Baildon Moors and Otley Chevin and all the downs in between. There is a 10 hour limit so you need to average 2.3 mph but Scouts and LDWA mean generous catering and hot drinks to enjoy at the checkpoints. What is there not to like? Again some Bingley runners were using this as a good way to keep their miles up over the winter and to challenge them to move a little faster and further than they may do on a training run.
Bingley (and partners) results :
12 509 Colin Walker MV50 1/43 03:06:06
49 521 Lesley Watson FV50 1/26 03:39:02

Thanks to Paul & Caren for the photos. Bingley readers should recognise the bank below the caravan site 😉.

Windy Hill BM 19km 640m Sun 11 Feb 24 : Club Fell Championship Race No 1
Our first Club Fell Championship race – longer than expected, for me at least – about 8 miles the last time I ran it – but they had to move the start which added an extra climb too. So a challenging first race – both length and time of year. But that didn’t deter first time fell-runners Simon Butterfield and Paul Allwood; both well prepared with recces or plenty of winter off-road running under their belts. A first ‘fell’ race for Dave Town too, but he has done some serious winter off-road ultras like the Cheviot Goat (59miles, Cheviots, 5 Dec 23, 15/105, 16hrs 55mins) so knows all about winter fells. Scott hasn’t ‘fell raced’ for a number of years but is well versed in off-road run or mountain bike ventures all year round.
Driving over for the 10am start in clear weather and good visibility until the top of the Pennines then we were enveloped by thick cold grey mist (as forecast!). It hung around for the start, then lifted for a while before settling back down while many runners were still on the tops, and then slowly clearing by early afternoon. So how did we do :

Pos No Name Cat Cat Pos Time
229 56 Cheryl Jepson FSen 18 02:43:05
193 34 Caren Crabtree F45 6 02:24:12
128 92 Simon Butterfield M40 16 02:07:45
100 55 Dave Stephenson M60 3 02:01:09
98 95 Paul Allwood MSen 34 01:59:53
73 61 Lesley Watson F50 1 01:54:06
56 144 Amicia Lee FSen 2 01:48:16
37 129 Martin Peace M55 1 01:41:56
32 91 Dave Town MSen 20 01:39:31
19 43 Scott Smith M40 3 01:34:05
11 57 Colin Walker M50 1 01:30:16

Especially well done to our first timers Paul & Simon, great see Martin back in longer action (longest race for a long time and happy to finish), and solid runs for Cheryl & Caren who already had long runs in their legs in the last few weeks. As happens in these type of races, Cheryl found friends in some fellow runners at her pace – looking after each other on the top of a very misty Blackstone Edge. Category wins for Lesley (F50), Martin (M50) and Colin (M50) – yes I know Colin is back with P&B but England Athletics still have him linked to Bingley too, and he is Lesley’s partner so I’d better include him 😉. Scott was our first Bingley finisher – complete with blooded knee from a fall on the final descent. A great second place for Amicia – she was just behind the third placed lady on the final climb but looked the stronger of the pair and on the final flatter section was able to take and hold second place. And the cherry on the cake – the Ladies team prize – for Amicia, Lesley and Caren. Great result.
