Bingley Harriers on the Fells – mid Feb to mid Mar, and what’s coming up for the Club Fell Championship 2024.

Midgley Moor BS 8km 381m Sun 18 Feb 24
Harry Atkinson was our sole runner in one of his very local races. A short moorland blast with route choices. Harry (M70) was 72nd out of over 100 runners in 74 minutes, with a winning time of 38.40 (Martin Howard, CVFR). Woodentops were out on photo duty. Thanks Dave & Eileen.

Ilkley Moor Fell Race AS 8km 402m Sun 3 Mar
After another wet week and the wettest February on record the bogs and mud were guaranteed but amazingly the day was dry, calm and we even had some sunshine. Just the other side of Bingley Moor, Ilkley is always a popular race and 9 Harriers and 4 Guests who have started running with us, were amongst the 266 starters. It was also the Yorkshire Championship race for Seniors and U23 so an especially competitive field. The race was won by Ben Rothery (MSEN, Ilkley, 37.05) and Eve Whitaker FU19, Leeds Uni, 43.12, 19th overall). Our results :

Great to see Emyr making a trip back from York and recent guests Zac, Laura, Ami and Louise out enjoying what is a tough Short fell race – fully deserving it’s Category A (hard!) status. I hope you will be running in blue & white stripes soon. And well done Bruce for taking home the Prize for being the oldest competitor. Thanks to Martin P for collecting it.
I was on support, cheering, and photo duty. Photos on the Team App Gallery

and plenty of extra photos from Woodentops, from the earlier Junior races too.

High Cup Nick 15km 450m Sat 24 Feb 24
The cancellation of the English XC Championships due to waterlogged parking gave a couple of people the opportunity to take a trip to the Eden Valley. I don’t know about the race but having walked High Cup Nick a couple of times it seems ideal for a challenging and spectacular race.
Bingley results from 412 runners :
7th 335 Ian Holmes M50 01:06:58
76th 89 Emma Clayton WSEN 01:22:49
106th 303 Ian Ferguson M60 01:26:01
297th 285 Stephen Fry M60 01:47:34

Ian H was 1st M50 and, in 7th overall , was less than 7 mins behind the winner Ian Lamont (Helm Hill). Emma was 6th Lady out of a field of 111. Ian F and Stephen were 2nd and 22nd out of 38 M60 runners. Good to see Stephen out racing after foot problems kept him grounded for much of the winter.
Haworth Hobble BL 51km/31.7 miles 1340m/4396’ Sat 9 Mar 24
Over 600 runners, including pairs, lined up for the 8am start. Driving through Hebden Bridge late morning, on my way for a Flower Scar recce, I saw a number of runners and again a little later near Todmorden.

396th 822 Ian Ferguson/Lucy Ferguson MIX 07:27:04
497th 356 Cheryl Jepson F 08:26:01

Andrew and Simon were first Pair (13th overall) – Andy was happy enough but said his preparation had been hindered by niggles and life. Andy Gibbons set off with Steven but dropped out – I haven’t heard why. No heat problems for Steven 😉. Great to see Stephenson and Ferguson family pairs out. And massive well done to first timers, Simon and Cheryl for definite and maybe some of the others.
