Covid-19 Risk Assessment Advice for Bob Smith Handicap
(1) If you have any of the following symptoms (new dry cough, loss of taste and smell, high temperature) do not enter any of the races.
(2) Wear facemasks unless running the races. Spectators should also observe social distancing.
(3) Please enter and pay for entries to races on- line ( see tonykingham@blueyonder.co.uk).
This will reduce the need to queue at the start area and help to avoid contact between runners.
(4) If handling money at registration, then please use the hand sanitisers available at the registration desk.
(5) Please ensure that you leave name and contact details with Tony Kingham when you enter.
(6) Please arrive at the start only a few minutes before your official handicap time ( First runner(s) will start at 7.00pm) to avoid queuing and gathering in groups likely to increase contact between runners).
(7) If you enter on the evening of the race then wear a face mask whilst queueing , maintain social distancing in any queue, use hand sanitisers and once you have your number and handicap details leave the start area.
(8) Run in single file unless overtaking and avoid contact with other canal towpath users.
(9) At the end of the races please enter the finish funnel but try to keep a social distance from other finishers, spectators, and officials.
(10) Please leave the finish area as soon as you have completed the race. There should be no group gathering and competitors should disperse immediately they have finished their races. Similarly, spectators should leave the site as soon as possible after the finish of any person they are watching and supervising.
Enjoy your races and help other club members to enjoy theirs. Keep safe.

HEALTH AND SAFETY – INFORMATION FOR COMPETITORS AND SPECTATORS
1. Always treat other users of the canal and the canal towpath with the same courtesy as you would expect to be treated.
2. If any incident with another member of the public occurs whilst you are running the race, report this to the race organisers.
3. Be aware that whilst the stretch of towpath used for the race is generally in good condition there are occasional potholes, loose gravel surfaces and fallen branches which could cause trips, sprains, falls. Any accident should be reported to the race organisers as soon as possible so that the appropriate action can be taken.
4. Be aware of equipment used by other canal towpath users; this might include extendable dog leads used by dog walkers, bicycles, angling equipment (rods, poles, fishing baskets); mooring ropes used by canal boats and barges.
5. Always run in single file (except when overtaking), for your own safety and the safety of other towpath users.
6. Always run on the side of the towpath furthest from the canal.
7. Note that the canal is deep, especially near and in Dowley Gap and Hirst Wood locks. On no occasion should runners or spectators climb on lock gates and lock paddles.
8. Dowley Gap lock is very near to the start and finish of the course. All runners are asked to observe the warning signs posted near the lock and the lock gates. Deep Water Keep Away.
9. In the case of any cuts, abrasions, sprains avoid the use of canal water for cleansing. The canal water is not clean enough for this use. To use it for cleansing purposes might lead to infections or disease. There will be a first aider and a first aid kit at the start/ finish for dealing with minor cuts and bruises. Seek attention as soon as possible.
10. In the hopefully unlikely event of any runner or spectator falling into the canal, there are always likely to be other runners in the vicinity to help rescue.
However, any contact with the water in the canal or any swallowing of canal water should be reported to the race organisers at once and to your GP as soon as possible. Canal water can carry diseases, some fatal, and you need to have your condition monitored after any swallowing or contact with canal water.
11. Earphones and any devices which might reduce the ability to pick up warning sounds such as bicycle bells, shouted warnings, dog barks, are not to be used under any circumstances during the race. To do so will invalidate the insurance you pay for in your £15 England Athletics affiliation fee which is part of your club membership fee.
We hope this advice will help in increasing your enjoyment of this race.
